Elisha’s birth story

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

When Mike and I were thinking of baby names I made a big list of names I liked and showed it to Mike. The name we both really liked was Joel, which means messenger. However, we could never settle on it. Then one Sunday our pastor talked about Elijah and Elisha. That afternoon we talked about the sermon and both agreed that we liked the name Elisha. After we prayed about it, we knew that is what we should name our son. We knew it was kind of a risk. It’s not a common name and people often think it is a girl’s name before they see Elisha. (You can’t mistake him for a girl once you see him. He is a big, handsome dude)

We looked up the meaning for “Elisha” after we decided on the name and found that the meaning is “God will save me” and “Protected”. The verse that goes with it is Psalm 62:7, “On God my salvation and my glory rest; the rock of my strength, my refuge is in God.” It was settled, the little boy growing inside me was Elisha and we called him that every time we talked to him.

My pregnancy was normal and baby Elisha was healthy; however, I always had a sense to pray for Elisha. I remember praying the meaning of his name over him all the time. I wasn’t scared for Elisha, but I just had a strong sense to pray for him because something might be wrong.

September 18th finally arrived. It was my due date and I was still pregnant. I was convinced that morning that I would be pregnant forever. I went on a really long walk, played outside with Tristen, and had dinner plans with Mike. It was a beautiful fall day and I didn’t expect the arrival of sweet Elisha, but at 3:30 while I was at the park with Tristen I was having steady contractions. One of my friends told me she thought I was in labor, but I didn’t believe her. Just 30 minutes later on my walk home from the park I was starting to change my mind. I called Mike and told him not to be late coming home from work. By the time I was off the phone with him I was having contractions every 7-8 minutes. He rushed home and we left for the hospital. (Good thing my parents live close and could take Tristen…thanks mom and dad!)

When I got to the hospital I was already 6+ cm dilated. Good thing we left when we did!! They gave me the option of walking around or breaking my water for me. I chose to walk around, which didn’t last long. I am not a very patient person most of the time. So, the midwife, who also delivered Tristen, broke my water. When they broke my water they found out Elisha had had his first or more bowel movements in the womb. The midwife informed me that they would call a NICU team to standby so they could clear Elisha’s mouth and lungs in case he had ingested any of the stool. Only 45 minutes passed before I was ready to push. I only pushed for 6 minutes and our baby was out.

It was such a different experience from Tristen’s birth. Tristen came out kicking and screaming. Elisha didn’t cry and they didn’t stimulate him to breathe because they didn’t want him to ingest any more stool. He was gray in color and didn’t move. I looked away and prayed. I had peace and I didn’t want the sight of Elisha to steal that from me. Soon I heard faint crying and before I knew it I had a little brown-haired squirmy baby in my arms. He was really stinky because he had been in a giant poop bath, but he was beautiful. They weighed him and he was a perfect 6lbs 5oz. We watched his first bath, first footprints, and I fed him for the first time. It was so amazing and it all happened so fast! We thanked God for our precious boy, especially since we heard from the nurse that she had never seen such thick stool from a baby before. She told us we were “lucky” he didn’t ingest any of it.

Introducing him to Tristen and adjusting to our new lives was really wonderful and difficult, but we remained so grateful for the health of our little boy. We had heard before that it is really dangerous for babies to have their first bowel movements in the womb. However, it didn’t hit me how blessed we were and how the Lord protected Elisha until I was at his two week doctor appointment. Our pediatrician told us that she used to work in the NICU often and out of all the babies she saw in there, the ones that had swallowed stool in the womb were the sickest and died the most often. She told us it was a blessing from God that Elisha was healthy.

Elisha:
“God will save me” and “Protected”
Psalm 62:7, “On God my salvation and my glory rest; the rock of my strength, my refuge is in God.”

Thank you Lord for our precious son!

Call to Missions

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

We have been going through all of our stuff lately, so we can get rid of things and pack our bags for Ecuador. While I was going through stuff I came across a scrapbook I made after my senior year of high school. When  I was a senior my class went on a missions trip to the Dominican Republic, and in the section about the Dominican in my scrap book I found this prayer:

“November 20, 2003 1:30am.

Lord I think You are calling me to be a missionary. I can’t sleep because my mind is racing at this possibility. I have thought about it before, but have never taken it too seriously. I have never heard You so clearly, yet it scares me because I feel so inadequate. I hardly know what it means to be a missionary; I hardly know anything about You. I want to know you so much more and I want to be in the center of your will. So, I pray tonight that you would guide me and take my fear. Lead me in Your ways and continue to show me where You want me to be.”

I remember writing this prayer six years ago. Even more than that I remember sitting in a small classroom in the Dominican Republic sweating while listening to a missionary say he believed there were some of us seniors sitting in the room that were called to be missionaries. The Lord nudged me and spoke to me more clearly than He ever had up until that point in my relationship with Him. There was no denying that I had a calling upon my life. Up until that point I wanted to be a teacher. It was incredibly difficult to surrender that dream to Him because I had the dream of being a teacher since I was about five years old.

There have been quite a few things that have been difficult to surrender to the Lord while walking out what He has called me to. Living close to my family. A house. Money. Two cars.  Having comforts and conveniences. The list goes on. Honestly, there have been seasons when if the Lord had not held me up and I did not have a wonderful husband and great friends, I would have walked away from this calling. I would have given it up to buy a house and have “security” from a “real” job. I really would have turned my back and run, far and fast, but the Lord, in His grace and mercy, called me again and comforted me with His promises.

Now as we prepare for our February fourth departure, once again I can’t sleep because my mind is racing. Racing at the thought that it has been six years since the Lord has called me and I am about to step into what He has. For six years He has been preparing me, teaching me, loving me, and growing me. He has brought me a wonderful husband that has a similar vision. He has blessed me with two boys that will be lights shinning in the darkness. He has allowed me to cross paths with great teachers, godly mentors and wonderful friends.

It is not that I have “arrived”, no, like in my prayer I still feel so inadequate and I have so much more to learn, but to see the fruit of six years is amazing. It is a milestone in my walk with the Lord. It has been a difficult and joyous journey and I am beyond excited to continue to walk with the Lord into this next season of life.

One more thought, when we got married I got pregnant on our honeymoon, which was unplanned and one of the best things that has ever happened to me in my life. At that point, I had really given up on ever becoming a teacher because I wanted to be a stay at home mom and didn’t finish my schooling. Well, now that we are heading to Ecuador the Lord is allowing me to step into a teaching role. I get to home school my brother-in-law, David, who is 14 and has down syndrome. The Lord is giving me back my dream I surrendered to Him and beyond that, my kids get to be involved, so I still get to be with them. So, the Lord is bringing me to Ecuador to be a missionary, but I get to be a stay-at-home mom, and a teacher…I never could have planned it so well myself.

October Update

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

Hey Everyone,

Here’s the brief version of our update: You can click here for the longer version.

  • Our plans for Ecuador are starting to come together.
  • We have applied to a mission called Adventive Cross Cultural Initiatives. We have had a phone conference with the director of the mission and they love our “ministry plans”. We are waiting for our final acceptance.
  • We have been figuring out what viasa to get once in Ecuador. We would like to get permanent residence visas, which will save us a lot of time in the future. Please pray with us about this.
  • We have been loving teaching the fifth and sixth graders. They are so wonderful and really want to know the Lord.
  • Tristen has been learning to crawl and walk. He now says “ma ma, ba ba, and da da.” We put new pictures and a cute video of him up on our website.

Thank you so much for taking your time to read our newsletter. We are also so grateful for the encouraging messages. We could not do this without you guys!

God’s richest blessings,

September Update…Ecuador Here We Come

Monday, September 29th, 2008

What’s up with the Waskoskys?
September 2008

Dear Friends and Family,

It has been such a long time since we have written! We are sorry for our lack of communication. After Tristen was born we settled into a “routine” of life and began to think that possibly we would stay in the states for a couple of years or possibly forever. Mike has continued to work at Spectrum Staffing and is keeping up his Spanish. He thought about returning to school and we even began considering buying a house.

About two months after Tristen was born, the Lord really began to move in our lives. We were greatly challenged by our Pastor Matt Hedrick. We began to really press into the Lord, learn about prayer and fasting, and about yielding ourselves to Him. We also began to learn a lot about seeking him as a couple and how to slow down the pace of our lives, so we would have time for Him and our family. It has been an exciting time and a difficult one. We are very grateful that the Lord is taking us on the journey.

We started to have a desire to become more connected with our home church Bethany. I, Lindy, am volunteering in the 1 year old room once a month, Mike is ushering, and we will also be greeters. We are most excited about our role as 5th and 6th grade assistant teachers. We will be working with another couple to disciple these precious kids as they enter this “transition” stage in their lives. We start on October 1st and cannot wait to see what the Lord has in store.

After we “signed up” to become involved in all these things, we began to sense that the Lord was renewing our call to missions. It was a strange time because we felt like we were just settling into our church and loving it. However as we sought the Lord together, we knew the Lord would have us return to Ecuador to become full-time missionaries.

As we began pursuing this we found that many people were in agreement that Ecuador is a great place for us, and we discovered there are many opportunities for us. We will be returning to Shell, where Mike’s parents live. I, Lindy, will be home schooling, David, Mike’s 13 year old brother who has down syndrome for 20 hours a week. This will greatly free up Mike’s parents to work on Bible Translation, which they have been working on for 21 years.

Mike hopes to work with another couple named Dan and Shay Edwards who have a heart to disciple Ecuadorians. Mike will possibly be recruiting and encouraging Ecuadorians to attend the discipleship school the Edwards want to start. Mike is very excited for this opportunity because he has a heart to see Ecuadorians really come to know the Lord.

We also hope to work with Casa de Fe or “House of Faith” orphanage. The orphanage was started to reach out to children with special needs because in Ecuador these children do not have rights and are often not cared for. However the orphanage has grown like crazy and any child who will not be cared for is accepted. Last I heard they had 50 kids.
The facility they are currently in is way too small to hold 50 kids, so the director has purchased land to build a better facility to accommodate all the kids. Mike hopes to work on the construction of the new property and possibly help facilitate work teams that come from the States. I, Lindy, hope to play with, love, sing to, read to and be with the kids.

We are incredibly excited to head to Ecuador, but it will also be bittersweet. We have been so blessed to live close to my parents and living so far away will be hard. Leaving our church will also be very hard. However, we know the Lord has called us to this and we cannot wait to see what He has for us! We ask that you would consider supporting us prayerfully and financially in the future.

It’s fun to imagine what Tristen will be like once we are ready to leave for Ecuador. He is seven months old now and he has grown like crazy. He is 24 inches tall and weighs around 16 pounds. He loves to hold onto our fingers and walk around. We hope he learns to crawl or walk on his own soon because our backs hurt from walking with him all day long.

One summer afternoon I was swimming with Tristen in the pool at our apartment complex and there were some little Latin kids swimming with us. One of them took the hat off of Tristen’s head and both kids screamed and were laughing. They couldn’t believe how bald he was. Latin babies are almost always born with a head full of dark, thick hair, so his baldness was shocking to these kids. Tristen’s hair has grown some since then and we think his hair is going to stay red. We love it, and it will be fun to see what the Ecuadorians think! Tristen is a wonderful blessing and we couldn’t imagine our lives without him!

Wow, this is getting long, but thanks for taking the time to read it. Mike and I appreciate your love, friendship, prayers, and support. We will be sending more updates as the details come together. If you do not wish to receive our newsletter, please feel free to let us know and we will take you off the mailing list!

Thank you again and God Bless,
Lindy, Mike and Tristen Waskosky

Please pray with us that:
•    We would seek the Lord during this time and know when to head to Ecuador
•    All the details come together
•    That we are accepted to the mission we are currently applying for.
•    That we have favor with the Ecuadorians government, so we can get the permanent residence visas we are applying for.
Please let us know if we can be praying for you in any way!

If you are in the Minneapolis area and want to hear more about what we hope to do in Ecuador, we would love to have you over for supper or something, so we can share more.

Baby in a Tree!

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

You have to have an open mind. Don’t look for a Baby, and you will see the Baby!   Once you see it you won’t see anything else!!!

Dec/Jan Update

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

Dear Friends and Family,

If you would like to read it in word format please click here or you can read below:

We hope that your Christmas and New Years were filled with joy, love and praise! We also hope you found time to slow down, enjoy the season, spend time with family and loved ones, and worship our creator!

We had a great Christmas and were blessed to spend some time with both of our families! It was great, and we know it may not always be that way because Mike’s parents are not usually in the States for Christmas time, so we cherished our time with them, as well as with Mike’s older sister, her husband, and two little girls. We enjoyed great food and fun times with my family as well, and continue to be incredibly blessed to live close to them!

Mike and I are very happy to report that Mike found a job! He started working for Spectrum Staffing almost a month ago. He uses his Spanish almost all daylong because he is a Bilingual Staffing Coordinator, and basically he helps Latins (as well as some other people) find jobs. He loves his job, and has had the opportunity to meet some people from Ecuador! We both know his job is from God because the job found him more than he found the job. Also, the people he works for are believers, and they have given Mike permission to pray with any of his clients as the Lord leads. They also allow him to hand out Bilingual Bibles! Mike often jokes that he is getting paid to be a missionary! It was and continues to be a huge blessing.

I, Lindy, have been doing well also. I am working on classes online, and preparing for the baby. My belly is growing lots because the baby now weighs somewhere around 4 ¾ pounds and is around 18 inches long! His or her main priority is to gain weight, and his or her lungs and nervous system are maturing more and more each day. It is amazing to learn about what our little one is going through, and I am always amazed at how much my belly can stretch. Being pregnant has opened my eyes more and more to how amazing our Creator is. His design is so perfect and wonderful.

Mike and I are cherishing our last days without a little one around as much as possible. We are also looking to become involved with some local ministries. We have a possible opportunity to work with a Latin Church-plant, and we are also looking to get more involved with our home church. We are very excited to see where the Lord takes us in regards with the new opportunities before us.

Thank you so much for taking your time to read our little update! We hope it found you well. May the Lord bless you richly!

Love,
Mike and Lindy

Prayer Requests
•    Pray for the health of our baby and for my, Lindy’s, health as the big day draws nearer.
•    Pray for Mike that he would be a witness at his job.
•    Pray that we would follow the Lord’s leading as we look to become involved with different ministries.

October/November Update

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

Dear Friends and Family,
Read this update in a word document here: October/November Update

Mike and I hope that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and we hope that in this busy holiday time that you can find time to relax, enjoy family, praise God and reflect on what is important.

Mike and I spent the month of October in Ecuador. It was a relaxing time. We spent most of the time in Shell, which is a small town a couple hours just outside the rainforest. It was in this town that Mike spent most of his growing up years. Mike’s parents let us stay in the downstairs apartment of their house because they are here in Minnesota until late December.

It was a blast being in Ecuador with Mike. He was able to show me the things he did when he was growing up, tell me a lot of stories, and introduce me to many of his Ecuadorian friends. While in Shell we spent some time at the orphanage down the street. We also hung out with some friends from Bethany College who had just gotten married and were on their honeymoon in Ecuador. They stayed with us in Shell for a week and we had a blast that week visiting some waterfalls, riding across a deep ravine in a cable car, and renting mopeds in a nearby tourist town. We took the mopeds up the side of a mountain. It was breathtakingly beautiful and the volcano nearby was spewing ash, which was an incredible site!

During our time in Ecuador, Mike and I spent a lot of time praying about our future. We thought that God would lead us to work in Ecuador, but after much time in prayer we think the opposite is actually true. Mike and I think that God clearly showed us not to work towards returning to Ecuador for full-time ministry at this time. We are not sure what the Lord has for us instead, so we are seeking Him and doing our best to glorify Him wherever we are.

The day after we returned from Ecuador we moved into our new apartment in Excelsior, Minnesota. Mike and his dad did tons of work and had almost everything moved in to our new home in one day. So far, we love living here. Excelsior is a great place to live, and it gives us the feeling of living in a small town. We can walk to the charming downtown, visit little shops, watch a movie, or walk by the beautiful lake. We also have great neighbors. One of them made us a homemade pumpkin pie the day we moved in!

A week after we moved into our apartment we were able to have dinner with Mike’s parents, who were visiting us for the weekend , and my parents. It was a great time, and made our apartment feel even more like home.

Mike is looking for a job right now. He hopes to work with computers in a help-desk job. With this job he would help people fix their computer problems. I am glad one of us is good with computers! He has had a few interviews and many calls for possible jobs. It is encouraging, but also stressful to be job hunting. We are trusting God for the perfect job.

The baby is growing tons right now! The baby can hear sounds and gets startled when there are loud noises. It is also calmed down by my voice and often kicks when Mike talks to him or her. The first Sunday we went to church after being back from Ecuador the baby moved and kicked almost the entire service, especially during worship. It is an incredible feeling. We went to the doctor right after getting home and they reported that the baby is still doing great, but they did change my due date to February 22 instead of February 14. We cannot wait to meet our little gift from God!

These past two months have been wonderful and filled with blessings. We have been surrounded and blessed by family. Mike’s dad, and my family helped us so much with the moving process, Mike’s parents have already been able to stay with us, and we enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving meal with my family. We are truly blessed!

We thank every one of you for taking your time to read this letter and we are so grateful for all your thoughts and prayers.

God richest blessings,
Lindy and Mike

Prayer Requests:
•    For Mike to find a great job, and that we would be patient and wise while we wait for that perfect job.
•    For our baby and his or her continued good health and development.
•    That Mike and I would continue to seek the Lord and glorify Him wherever we are.
•    That we would be able to witness to our neighbors in the apartment. Mike met some Bosnians!!

Everyday Life

What’s up with the Waskoskys

When Mike and I found out I was pregnant we thought we would not be able to go to Mexico City with BCOM for my internship. The joy of having a baby was more than enough to replace our disappointment, and it caused us to place all our trust in the Lord as we were unsure of what we would do in the future. We found ourselves in a place of surrender, and we were content. After sometime of praying and asking God what he would have us do, Paul Hartford, the internship director here at Bethany, told Mike during a meeting that he would allow us to go on the internship if that is what we thought God would have us do. After sometime praying and discussing what it would mean for us to go, Mike and I believe that the Lord is leading us to spend 16 months in Mexico City on a team for my internship, so that I might complete my B.A here at Bethany. We are so grateful to God because He is giving us the desires of our hearts. He brought us to a place of complete surrender, we grew closer to Him and now we get to take an amazing journey with Him! We will be leaving for Mexico in May of 2008. While in Mexico I will be taking classes taught by local pastors and teachers and a few BCOM teachers. I will also be getting involved in many ministry opportunities such as working with street children and teaching English as a second language. Mike will be able to participate in the internship 100% as will the baby! Mike and baby will have freedom to leave class or ministry when needed and they are willing to be flexible with me as well! We can’t wait!

Mike has been studying hard as usual. He just finished his class called “Cross Cultural Communication.” He enjoyed learning about the best ways to reach people in other cultures through study of their worldviews, effective communication, and good conflict resolution. Mike recently shared a video with the BCOM students on his internship. It is a really incredible video. He did a great job and puts a lot of effort into it!

I have been working with the family I have been working with since March. They have three children. I work specifically with their youngest daughter who has spin bifida. They are a great family and the job has taught me so much about children. I love it!

Prayer Requests

· Please pray for our baby that he or she would continue to develop into a healthy little one.

· Pray for Mike and I as we prepare to become parents.

· Please pray about becoming prayer or financial partners with me and Mike and we get ready to head to Mexico.

· Pray for Mike that he would finish strong in his school work.

· Pray that we would continue to grow closer to the Lord and share His love with others that they might come to know Him.

How Beautiful are the Feet of those who Bring Good News! Romans 10:15

July 23, 2007

Hanging out at the beach.

“We only have a fifty percent chance of hearing the heartbeat because you are only 9 or ten weeks along,” the doctor said. After the doctor said that he placed cold jelly on my growing belly. Then he began moving the cold wand around. Mike and I were both praying silently that we would hear the tiny heart beat. At first all we heard was a slow, strong heart beat. The doctor moved slowly across my belly and when he reached the left side suddenly we heard a rapid, strong tapping. It was our baby! “There it is. Sounds good,” said the doctor. Mike and I both wore large smiles and held hands tightly in excitement. Hearing the baby’s heartbeat magnified the miracle taking place in my body. It was incredible.

I am in my ninth or tenth week of pregnancy. The baby is about an inch or so long, but has developed in amazing ways. His or her lungs, liver, kidneys, intestines, and brain have all developed. His or her fingers are completely separated and his or her arms can bend at the elbows. He or she is constantly moving and taking in amniotic fluids. He or she is entering the stage of growing rapidly and maturing now that so much development has occurred. This means my belly will be growing, which I am excited for! My excitement for my belly to grow does not even compare to the excitement me and Mike have to meet our little one. Nine months seems like no time at all, but also like way too long. However, we know it is a great time for the Lord to prepare us for the challenges that lie ahead.

!

June Update

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

Mike and Lindy Waskosky

Bloomington, MN

June 24, 2007

Hello Everyone,

If you would like to see the newsletter with pictures please download this word file: june-newsletter.doc

This is Lindy writing for the first time! Mike and I hope you are all doing well and that this update finds you in peace and joy. I cannot believe it, but it has already been six weeks since Mike and I were married. This past month has been filled with some fun and exciting things.  I thought it might be fun to share some photos with you to show you what we have been up to.
Celebrating Mike’s 22nd Birthday!
Mike and I took a 12-mile canoe trip on June 2nd down the Canon River, which is located in southern Minnesota. It was a great time! During the last two miles we paddled as hard as we could because there was thunder rumbling in the distance and dark clouds looming overhead. When we finally got back to the place we rented our canoe from they told us it had been raining extremely hard, but we had stayed dry even though we were just a few miles away!
Kid’s Explosion
This past week Mike participated in Ministry week. He was involved in a community outreach called Kid’s explosion. This was similar to a large Vacation Bible School and then on Saturday there was a celebration with lots of food, prizes and games for the kids. We are praising God because parents and children gave their lives to the Lord during this event!
Student Appreciation
Mike and I also got to attend Student Appreciation here at Bethany. The mentors and teachers worked extremely hard to put together a great night for the students. This year the theme was “Shipwrecked”, so we all came in tattered clothes. The school building was transformed into a tropical island. The teachers and mentors were dressed up as natives. They treated us to a delicious meal, a great scavenger hunt, and delicious ice cream. It was a blast! Only at Bethany would the mentors, staff and faculty go to such lengths to bless the students!
Expecting!
And finally, the best news for last! I am privileged to be writing this month because Mike and I have some very exciting news to share with you all. There has been a little baby growing inside of me for the past five weeks (going on six)! Mike and are going on our seventh week of marriage. Both Mike and I are extremely excited and feel very blessed by the Lord. Both of us love kids and have a passion for family. I think we will both have a hard time waiting nine months to meet our baby! The doctor gave us a February 14th due date! The doctor we saw that day was a Christian and stated that our babies due date was “the love of the Lord shining through”.

Future Plans
Mike and I will not be able to go to Mexico with Bethany because our baby would only be four months old and there is a Bethany policy that babies must be one year old before going on internship. We are praying about going on my internship with Bethany in January 2009 because by then the baby will be 11 months old. Going in ’09 would give us a chance to live in our own apartment for a while, save some money, get to know our baby, build our support team, and there is a possibility that one of the internship sites will be in South America, which is where we feel called to.
Prayer Requests

•    Please pray for our baby! Pray for health, growth, and good development. Also pray for me as I have been very tired, which makes work difficult.
•    Please pray for Mike that he would be able to find a good job when he is done with school. If anyone knows of any job openings in MN please let us know! It can be any kind of job!
•    Please pray that we would find a place to live that is nice and affordable. If anyone knows of any good places for us to live for a little over a year let us know!
•    Pray for Mike that he continues to study hard! (He has done a great job and just received an A+ on the last test he took)

Thank you so much for your prayers! We appreciate them so much. We hope and pray that you are blessed and see God in amazing ways!

Love,
Lindy and Mike Waskosky
